Antique English Silverplate Teaspoons for 6 & Tongs Set
“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.” ~ Henry James, The Portrait of a Lady (1881)
From the heart of the English countryside, this Vintage Silverplate Teaspoons & Tongs Set brings together the serving niceties needed for afternoon tea at home. Created in sweet style with an artful attention to detail, this lovely set in its original presentation box includes 6 teaspoons and sugar tongs and comes to us from William Hutton & Sons.
William Hutton & Sons was a distinguished British silversmithing and manufacturing firm founded in 1800 by William Hutton in Birmingham, later relocating to Sheffield in 1832, a city long associated with metalwork. Over more than a century, the company became known for high-quality silver, electroplated ware, and flatware—embracing new techniques like electroplating under license from Elkington & Co. and developing a nickel alloy known as “British Plate” for superior plating. The business, which expanded under successive generations of the Hutton family, opened a London showroom, acquired other makers such as Rupert Favell & Co. and Creswick & Co., and produced pieces ranging from elegant Victorian and Arts & Crafts silver to decorative novelty items. Incorporated as William Hutton & Sons Ltd. in 1893, it remained influential until 1930, when it was absorbed by James Dixon & Sons. Today, Hutton pieces are prized for their craftsmanship and historical importance.
These lovely spoons were originally retailed at the renowned Reid & Sons of Newcastle upon Tyne—both distinguished makers of silver and influential retailers and jewelers, operating elegant city showrooms that sold a wide range of luxury goods alongside their own work. Trading as jewelers, silversmiths, and watch and clock makers, the firm stocked and commissioned pieces from other respected makers in addition to producing in-house silver, serving as a refined destination for quality craftsmanship and fine objects.
Still fitting snugly within the soft velvet of its striking presentation case, these smart and sparkling pieces will graciously ensure your afternoon tea is fit for a queen!
Strictly one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale. In very good antique condition. Box measures 8.5"W x 6.5"L x 1.25"H. Spoons: 4.5". Tongs: 4.5" X 2"
